Every month, women experience cramps, headaches, tender breasts, and mood swings, and go about their lives as if nothing has changed. So if life continues as normal when you’re on your period, why should it stop you having sex?
42% of men said that they would have sex with a woman if she was on her period.
30% of men said that it depends on their partner’s opinion.

So, three-quarters of us would happily have period sex or be up for trying it with the right person. So why is it such a taboo? One reason a lot of women avoid period sex is that they don’t want to talk to their partner about it to save the embarrassment or rejection. So I spoke to some men to see what their honest opinions of period sex are…
Dean, East Sussex
“I think it depends on my girlfriend’s opinion. We need to recreate a narrative with a partner that’s just about being comfortable with your body and yourself. So, if she’s happy with it, so am I.
“At the end of the day, it’s blood which isn’t anyone’s favourite thing but we all have it because we’re human. Jump in the shower together after if you need to clean up, get cosy, get rid of the taboo.
“I think it’s silly that we exclude boys from learning about periods. If you don’t educate boys on periods too, because they are just a fact of life, it creates a taboo”
“It’s a bit different, but it’s still sex so what’s the problem?”
“Bodily fluids are gross during sex anyway, a bit of blood doesn’t make a difference. No opinion on it really, I just don’t care about it.
“Sex is sex. It’s annoying cleaning up afterwards. I know some guys cringe about vagina blood but in the few times I’ve had period sex, it hasn’t been any different, so I’m cool with it.”
“I’d like to know if my partner is having her period rather than just waiting for me to find out, but I don’t mind it. Probably wouldn’t go down on her.”
“I will avoid using my best sheets. Many women have shame around their period and there are ways to lighten that shame including making it a feature or at least fun. With their consent and a playful mood sometimes painting blood patterns on the skin can be fun with the right partner.”
“I have done it in the past, I don’t have any problems with it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to do it, but it’s just as enjoyable, with minor restrictions – probably won’t go down on her.”
So all of the men I spoke to had pretty positive responses. It is something a lot of people are open to, but we need to have open dialogues about it to make a comfortable, happy sex life.
Why should you have sex when you’re on your period?
- An orgasm can help with cramps and relax your muscles.
- When you’re on your period, your clitoris is larger than usual so your orgasms will be more intense (I think that’s a pretty good reason).
- No need for lube!
- It can shorten the length of your period by up to two days (!!!)
