5 tips for staying safe on a night out

Whether you’re a student at university or you just love going out drinking, it’s incredibly important for you to stay safe. Going on a night out is exciting and fun; choosing an outfit, doing your hair and makeup and taking pictures with the girls – going out is always something that you look forward to! But sadly, there are dangers when you’re enjoying an alcohol-fuelled night.

Naturally, you’re vulnerable when you’re intoxicated, so it’s important to take extra precautions to avoid putting yourself in danger whether that’s from drink spiking, harassment or just not being in a good state to get yourself home. There are some nasty people out there and it can be frightening sometimes but this shouldn’t stop you from having a good time. We’re going to share some tips with you so you feel safe when you’re out drinking with your friends.

Don’t leave drinks unattended

Try your best to get your own drinks and even if a friend offers to buy you one, keep a close eye on the glass when it’s on the bar. And once you have your drink, avoid leaving it on a table somewhere to come back to it later. Always keep an eye on your drinks and don’t accept a random drink from someone you don’t know.

Make plans for your journey home

I know this is difficult sometimes because you never know how late you’ll be out, but if possible, pre-book a taxi so you know it will be there at a set time to get you home safely.

Never travel alone

Always make sure you have at least one other friend travelling home with you. Avoid walking anywhere even when you’re with someone. Travel home with a friend or the group you came out with and if you left anyone behind, be sure to text them when you get home safely so they can enjoy the rest of their night knowing that you’re safe.

Only carry the essentials

Take a little clutch bag out with you that only contains the essentials. Cash, keys, phone, ID and your lipstick are all you really need. Take cash out before you head out so you don’t have to take your debit or credit card with you. As well as protecting your account, it will also stop you from overspending!

Know your limits

Although many of us go out to “get wasted”, it’s very important to know how much alcohol you can drink to stay in a state where you know what you’re doing and where you’re going when the club or bar closes. Often when you’re drunk, you can lose your group of friends and end up alone so it’s important to stay within your limits to prevent anything bad from happening.
