Congratulations! You made it to 2018. You’ve probably set yourself a few goals, but if not we’ve come up with 12 things that you can do this year to make everyday worthwhile. Before you know it those 365 days will pass you by and you’ll be wishing in 2019, so let’s make this one count.

Write a to-do list every night for the next day

Rule number one of being productive; wake up each day knowing what you have to do. This way you can get all your tasks out of the way and get on with whatever you WANT to do.

Drink more water

The fixer of all evils. Drink more water to have a healthier digestive system, clearer skin and more energy. Staying healthy means you can smash out your 2018 goals – go pour yourself a glass now.

Leave your 2017 problems in 2017

I’m not saying ignore them, not all of our problems will be left behind, but you can make peace with them.

Struggling financially? Find a way you can manage this and work towards resolving it.

Depressed? Seek out counselling or see your doctor. That friend you fell out with in 2017? Put it down to experience and stop stalking their social media channels.

Think about what it is that you really want out of life

I don’t mean career-wise, I mean decide what your real desires are: do you want to live in another country? Do you want to have a family? Do you want to own a big house in the country? Do you want to start your own business? Do you want to travel the world? Want to write a book?

Make your year about taking baby steps towards that goal.

Say ‘no’ more

Try it once a day, just to practice saying no. You might not realise how much you exert yourself when you don’t actually want to.

Try meditation or mindfulness

If you don’t know where to start, check out some YouTube videos or listen to some meditation podcasts.

Spend money on experiences rather than things

I need to tell myself this more in the new year, because I have way too much STUFF. Spending your hard-earned cash on experiences means you make memories rather than cluttering your space with junk – clear home equals a clear mind.

Try not to romantise the new year

Things will go wrong, there will be days when you just want to sit and cry about life but this is just a part of being human.

Don’t think that just because there will be struggles, you still can’t make it the best year so far.

Make a plan for the year

What do you want to have achieved by 1st Jan 2019? Make mini goals you want to hit each month, work out what you want to have done by July.

Stick it somewhere you can’t ignore it – next to your bed or on your fridge. I know some people who put it next to their toilet, I mean you can’t really avoid it?

Be a productive procrastinator

Know that you’re a procrastinator? Find something you can do when you get like this, that actually achieves something.

For me, writing these articles is my procrastination from my degree work. Alternatively, I clean my kitchen or bathroom. Or sometimes I cook something tasty from scratch.

All of these things are actually generally productive and enriching in my life, even if they’re not what I’m meant to be doing. So instead of binging Netflix or scrolling through Twitter or Instagram, find your productive procrastination.

Take time to focus on your relationships

Call your mum at least once a week, meet up with that friend that you’ve been texting saying ‘we must meet up!’, book the train ticket to go and stay with your cousin for the weekend.

Go for it

You know that one thing you’ve wanted to do but have been putting off, just do it. Throw yourself into it. Want to go abroad? Work out how you’re going to afford it and start working. Want to start that business?

Make a plan and do it. Make that website, start the blog, take that course, apply for that job. Life is too short to not pursue the things that make you happy.

From all of us at The Growing Up Guide – we hope you have an incredible, inspiring 2018!
