As soon as a new year rolls around, we always promise ourselves that this is the year that we’re going to kick our bad habits to the kerb. Of course, nine times out of ten, we often forget about the promises we made to ourselves and return to the same old routine.
So to help you improve your 2018, here are a few tips for helping you break those bad habits and make 2018 your best year yet!
Stop making excuses
One of the worst tendencies that most people have is to make excuses. “Sorry I can’t make it today”, “I don’t really feel like working out right now”, “I’ll start that diet next week”. Now, I’m not saying you have to turn into Jim Carrey in Yes Man, but it’s not a bad starting point.
Remember that old friend you keep cancelling on because you just can’t be bothered when the time comes round? Go and see them, you never know, you might actually end up enjoying yourself.
If something is completely out of your comfort zone then don’t force yourself to do it, but if you can take baby steps towards it, then that’s a start.
Stop looking for instant gratification
Getting that motivation to actually get up and go to the gym is a proud moment for anyone who is a self-proclaimed procrastinator. However, that motivation can soon come to a halt when you don’t get the results you’re looking for.
Working out everyday for a week won’t immediately alter your figure (even though we all wish it would), and so you give it up because you got bored of not seeing any results.
Or, deciding to start saving your money and then realising you haven’t saved as much as you would have liked, so you then give up the idea entirely. I
nstead, you need to realise that you can’t achieve things instantly, and sometimes you have to work for a long time until you can reap the rewards. But, as long as you’ve got your mind-set on those ultimate goals, you’ve got everything you need to get there.
Stop the inaction
We all know that procrastination is a bad thing. Yes, we make jokes about it and we all admit to it, but underneath you know it’s something you need to stop, and that’s why we feel so guilty when we do it.
Stop leaving things for another day, it may be a hard habit to give up at first, but once you’ve broken free from that cycle, you will feel formidable.
Give up wasting time. After all, it is you who decides when things get done, and it’s your own time that you end up wasting. You don’t want to look back after all of this and say, “Oh I wish I would have just done that”. Regrets can be a bitch.
Stop abusing your health
When you think about improving your health, your mind instantly goes to “what’s the latest superfood?” Or, “what’s the newest fitness craze?” But, it’s not just about food and exercise, there are other things that you can do to gain a healthy attitude.
Simple things such as ridding your bedroom of technology so you can get an undisturbed sleep, or even ensuring that you drink 8 glasses of water each day will certainly perk you up and improve your mindset for the day.
However, remembering to eat right and exercising for at least 30 minutes a day will put you on top form; even if it’s just taking the dog for a quick stroll. You will notice the benefits!
