On turning 17, there is an overwhelming pressure that makes you feel like you have to Google “driving instructors near me” and book their first available slot. It’s totally normal to feel like that, especially if all of your friends are passing their tests around you.
You have to be mentally and physically prepared to start driving. If you’re a quick learner, lucky you! But if it takes you a while to get the hang of things, learning to drive can be a rather stressful journey. (If you pardon the pun!)
If you don’t feel ready to drive as soon as you turn 17, that’s fine. If you reach your 20’s and you’re starting to think “actually, I need to get this done” then no, it’s not too late!
Ask around your friendship group and get driving instructor recommendations. If you don’t like your instructor, don’t be afraid to shop around and find one that you feel 100% comfortable around as this is a super important element.
If you live in a city centre where you can walk to most places or where there are regular buses running, a car may not be necessary but driving will definitely benefit you in the future and here’s why:
It opens up new opportunities
If you can drive and you have a car, it opens up a whole new universe of opportunities. For example, if you’re applying for jobs and the office is outside of a city centre where there is no train station, you don’t need to panic because you can drive there!
It’s possible that an employer might choose an applicant who drives if an office is out of the way purely for convenience.
You can visit new places
You can travel all over the country when you drive! You can visit places you’ve always wanted to go and you can visit friends who might live in a different part of the country. Why wouldn’t you want to see new, beautiful places and spend time with friends you rarely see?
New found independence
You no longer have to rely on your friends and parents for a lift and you don’t have to worry about the buses that don’t follow the timetable.
If you want a box of 20 chicken nuggets at 1am on a Wednesday, you can do that!
You can start a one man band
There is no better feeling than blasting out your favourite playlist and singing along until your heart is content! Until you pull up at a red light and the car next to you is staring at you and you feel your entire face turn the colour of a tomato.
Long distance partners
You no longer have to have your Tinder distance on “5km.” If you want to go on a date in a different town, you don’t have to worry about train times.
And if you have a boyfriend/girlfriend who lives far away from you, you can just pop in your car and drive to see them whenever you like.
When it’s done, it’s done
Once you’ve passed your test, you’ve done it! If you need to re-take the test more than once or twice, who cares? You still have a licence and you can get yourself on the roads! You don’t have to worry about doing it again and you never have to have a lesson again! (win win)
Does anything else need to be said? If you’re hungover and in need of some McDonalds fries, you can go in your pyjamas and nobody will know… If that’s not worth passing your test for, I don’t know what is!
