Why it’s ok to be scared to graduate

The Growing Up Guide graduate university student life

Although the day you started college or university feels like yesterday, the day that you’re going to graduate comes around quicker that you might think.

Maybe you don’t feel like you’re ready to step into the adult life or you’re just scared for the life after university. I’m here to tell you that it’s oke to be scared to graduate.

First I’m going to tell you a little bit more about my situation and why I think that I can relate to you.

I’m currently in the last year of my Master’s degree and over the Christmas period I began to realize that after July I don’t have to go to university anymore. I actually have to apply for jobs and start my ‘adult’ life. To say the least this was quite a scary thought!

The most scary part of this whole thought process was “the unknown”.

I didn’t know what my life was going to look like after university. I also didn’t know what I wanted to do. And what kind of jobs I wanted to apply for.

All these questions made thinking about life after university very scary for me. If you’re in the same situation, let me tell you what I did to become less scared of “the unknown” and it might help you too.

First I started to think about the kind of company I’d see myself working for after I graduate.

Besides that I also started thinking about the function I’d like to apply for. What I also thought about was the courses I took during my master’s degree and which functions that would suite. Would it be necessary to take some extracurricular courses to make sure my resume and experience fits the future job better?

When you start thinking about these questions and try to answer them you might feel a little bit more comfortable with “the unknown” after university.

For me it always helps if I’m able to picture “the unknown” in my head and make it less abstract. By answering the questions above (and a lot more) I succeeded with being less scared to graduate and I hope that it will help you too.

Just don’t forget to remember that it’s oke to be scared, because growing up and starting this new part of your life is just a scary thing!
