Should tattoos and piercings be allowed in the workplace?

It’s 2018 we’ve had pretty much everything. From colourful fish net tights to colour blocking work suits – there’s a whole load of fashion and trends that have hit us.

I remember wanting to get my first piercing, however the whole idea of ‘no tattoos’ or piercings in the workplace’ constantly drilled into my head.

It was hard to know what was acceptable. Who said I wasn’t allowed to express myself? Why do companies not like them? Who said that a tattoo of something personal or sentimental ever made anyone bad or incapable of their job?

All they elicit are stereotypes from the person who views them as negative.

Are we still living in that medieval world where they should be banned and shamed and anyone with them shouldn’t have a job?

To some extent yes, I have experienced it in a variety of places even in my own job where certain tattoo’s or piercings are frowned upon.

Above the issues of health and safety it becomes a personal issue.

In my workplace hand tattoo’s are banned, any on the wrist are acceptable but any further than that have to be covered up.

I completely disagree with this rule but what makes the issue worse is that we are allowed to wear whatever clothes we want (within reason).

I could come in light blue jeans or a flamboyant dress and that’s acceptable.

But if I choose to have a tattoo that doesn’t affect my job or performance, it is suddenly shamed upon.

In recent years it seems that more people are coming under fire for minor issues.

In July of last year, Jo Perkins had her contract terminated due to a 4cm tattoo of a butterfly on her foot. The company claimed that she had failed to cover it up and had broken the no-visible-inking policy.

Jo wasn’t the first this has happened to. In a separate incident, a 39-year-old woman from Yorkshire was fired for having ‘Everything happens for a reason’ tattooed on her forearm.

It’s unacceptable that people are losing their jobs as they are choosing to express themselves.

What makes the matter worse is that these tattoo’s aren’t harmful. They don’t spread any hate or prejudice. They are harmless yet people have such an issue against them.

Legally, no real action can be taken. Employers have the free rein to hire and dismiss as they choose, but there are of course boundaries to this. But the issue still exists evidently in the workplace.

It’s all well and good hearing everyone else’s opinions on this matter but what is yours? If you were an interviewer and someone had a full sleeve or even one tattoo would that effect how you thought about them?

With piercings the issue is still evident. It’s no surprise that more people are choosing them. They’re attractive  –  you get the chance to experiment and express yourself without it being as permanent as a tattoo.

It’s upsetting that workplaces have an issue with this.

A piercing is a piece of metal that shouldn’t be used to define us.

  1. I think it’s terrible how some people are viewed for having tattoos but at the same time if it’s your company then it’s your choice. So I can’t argue with that. I love tattoos though😋

  2. It’s an outdated concept to me. For years I’ve wanted to get a small nose piercing but because of the conservative job titles I hold, I can’t because of policy. To me, as long as hate messages aren’t inked, at least small expressions of self through tattoos and piercings should be acceptable and embraced.
